The dog has since been found at the bottom of Newhaven Road - a mile away from where the car was stolen - but the vehicle is still missing.

Detective Sergeant Lynsey Thomson said: “Fortunately the victim was not injured during the incident, but is obviously deeply upset at the theft of his car and his pet beagle.

We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Willowbank Row area on Friday afternoon and remembers seeing anything suspicious.”

The young male who stole the car, registration DN06 WND, was described as being 15-16 years old and 5ft 9 inches tall with dark hair. He was wearing all dark clothing with a hood up and a backpack.

His other youths are of a similar age, dressed in grey.
