The 28-year-old male driver of the Corsa was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 39-year-old female driver of the Honda suffered serious injuries and is being treated in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. A 39-year-old male and a boy aged nine and a girl aged seven were kept in hospital for observation.

Sergeant Jon Barron, of the Aberdeen division road policing unit, said: “This was a horrific collision and our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the man who has sadly lost his life.

“In order to help piece together exactly what happened I would like anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have seen either vehicle on the road shortly before, to contact police as soon as possible. Any information, although it may seem insignificant, might be absolutely crucial to our inquiries.”

On 28 September, lorry drivers Farquhar Kennedy, 54, and Rimas Kuskys, 43, were killed following a crash involving two HGVs and a car on the A90, one of Scotland’s busiest trunk roads, north of Aberdeen. The female driver of a Vauxhall Mokka suffered minor injuries.
