World's Ugliest Pets are celebrated tonight on ITV

Hairless guinea-pigs, giant snails, featherless chicks and "very-unfortunate looking" dogs are all set to be featured in a celebration of the world's ugliest pets on ITV this Tuesday.

Following the 2018 edition of Crufts, World's Ugliest Pets plans to pivot the spotlight from fetching pooches to pets afraid of their own reflection.

Presented by Jonathan Creek actress Caroline Quentin - a self confessed animal lover - the show will bring viewers face to face with both Britain and the world's least attractive pets.

'The good, the bad and the ugly'

Though exhibiting aesthetically challenged pets seems like an obscure form of animal cruelty, the show is looking to highlight the bonds between these pets and their benevolent owners.

The documentary looks to prove that looks aren't everything.

Quentin says of her hunt for hideous pets: “I think all my animals are absolutely beautiful. But not all animals are drop-dead gorgeous. In their world, as in the human world, there’s the good, the bad and the ugly!”

Many of the pets featured are shown to have unique personalities, who have changed the lives of their guardians - and during the show, Caroline Quentin looks to find out why owners have deliberately opted to adopt an ugly pet.

One of the dogs featured is Mugly the Chinese crested.

In 2012, Mugly was crowned the world's ugliest dog for his unconventional appearance. Sadly in 2017 the underdog lost his battle with Doggy Dementia - but not before leaving an indelible mark in his owner's heart.

Plotting victory

Throughout her journey Quentin looks to recruit Britain's worst-looking mutt to take to the World's Ugliest Dog Contest in California - the site of Mugly's greatest triumph.

The hope is to return to Great Britain with silverware, but standing in the contender's way is the undeniably ugly 2016 champion Sweepea Rambo - also a Chinese crested.

Quentin and her chosen pooch strive to pull of an unlikely victory at the unconventional beauty pageant and return to Great Britain with the dubious title of the World's Ugliest Dog.

Can they pull it off?

The World's Ugliest Pets is on ITV at 8pm this Tuesday
