Which? name cot mattress a 'don't buy' due to smothering risk

Consumer body Which? is calling for a cot mattress to be removed from sale after a failure in a recent test caused Which? to add it to their 'don't buy' list.

Which? issued a warning to parents about the Stokke cot mattress after it failed a firmness test, raising concerns that a baby could be smothered if they roll onto their face while sleeping.

The firmness test became part of British Safety Standards in 2017 - however the Stokke Home Bed Mattress passed all safety standards in force when it launched in 2015.

The Stokke Home Bed Mattress was on sale in a number of major high street retailers as well as numerous online outlets.

Which? have asked for the Office for Product Safety and Standards to step in and have called on the manufacturer of the mattress to withdraw it from sale.

A spokesperson for Stokke told Which?: "The safety and wellbeing of the babies and children using our products is our number one priority and we take your concerns very seriously.

"While we meet mandatory safety requirements in UK with our mattress, we have still ordered an additional risk assessment by a third party.

"We can confirm that Stokke® never received any report of any injuries related to this mattress or its’ firmness on any of our crib designs."

Stokke also confirmed that, should the third party risk assessment concur with the findings, they will take appropriate action immediately.
