Studying a language can be tiresome and frustrating for many, but taking the time to learn a another language can pay off – particularly if you want to earn a big salary.
A study by education experts Exam Papers Plus proved that some languages are really worth learning, revealing the top 10 that will earn you the most pennies in the UK.
The study looked at 22 of the world’s most common and in-demand languages, analysing 104,000 job adverts in the UK on Adzuna, looking specifically for foreign-speaking skills.
The study revealed the languages that employers offer the most salary for, finding that those who are fluent in Arabic can earn a huge £43,879 a year.
The language is also in demand within the job market, with 1,391 jobs currently advertised on Adzuna.
Swedish speakers were found to earn the second highest salaries, although French was the language most in demand.
Removing English from the line-up, French topped the charts with more than 10,000 jobs advertised.
However, Persian was found to be the lowest valued language to learn based on the average salary.
Currently, there are just 66 Persian-speaking jobs advertised on Adzuna in the UK, offering an average salary of £25,090.
Faisal Nasim, Private tutor and Founder of Exam Papers Plus, said: “In the new year we see an increase in the number of people wanting to learn a new language.
“French and Spanish are some of the most popular but when comparing it to the salary you could take home – we found there are other language skills that can earn you more money if you were to use it in your career.”

- Chinese – average salary: £38,530
- Vietnamese – average salary: £37,918
- Dutch – average salary: £37,109
- Spanish – average salary: £36,525
- German – average salary: £35,859
- French – average salary: £35,213
- Filipino – average salary: £35,000
- Korean – average salary: £33,586
