A kayaker was slapped in the face by a seal with an octopus while on an excursion in New Zealand.
The once-in-a-lifetime event was captured by GoPro content creator Kyle Mulinder, who was visibly stunned by the humorous attack.
Since the video was posted online it has become a viral sensation.
‘What a day to remember’
In the clip, which is currently making it way around the net, you see Kyle enjoying the waves with his team.
Suddenly the water next to him gets rough and a seal jumps out with an octopus in its mouth – and slaps Kyle directly in the face.
Taiyo told our sister title iNews: “We were kayaking in the winter NZ Kaikoura, beautiful day, seals were swimming and enjoying sun on the rocks.
“Right around lunchtime, several seals started to swim around.
“We just thought they were refreshing their body, yet apparently they were seeking more food.
“One seal swims right next to us, having an octopus in his mouth, pops right up of the surface next to us, then tries to chew up the leg but ended up slapping our face!”
He went on: “Such a raw moment, brought us so much laugh to all of us all day long.
“What a day to remember!”
The angry little seal is reportedly a New Zealand fur seal – one of many that live near South Island.
The sea creatures have octopus as a staple in their diets, usually grabbing them on the sea floor.
Seals often rise to the surface when ripping off tentacles before eating the body – this one however proved to be a very messy eater.
