This is the moment a boy racer was caught crashing at 90mph – on the dashcam of a parked police car.

Officers were waiting in a layby when Lewis Box raced past with three terrified friends in his Citroen C1.

Moments later, he lost control and swerved from side-to-side before crashing into a vehicle from behind.

Banned from driving for two years

Box, 20, has now been banned from driving for two years and given a 12-week suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to dangerous driving.

Remarkably, nobody in the vehicle suffered serious injury in the collision on the A4 near Chippenham in Wiltshire, on 7 July last year.

PC Andy Lee of Wiltshire Police said, “Box was travelling at such speed that the impact of the collision caused his vehicle to spin off to the right violently, into the verge on the opposite carriageway, before rolling multiple times.

“The officers who witnessed the incident remained with Box while emergency services attended and were able to cut him free from the vehicle.”

The consequences of driving dangerously

Swindon Magistrates Court heard how three friends got a lift from Box which turned into a terrifying ordeal.

They begged him to slow down but he only went faster, reaching speeds of about 90mph down Chequers Hill between Corsham and Chippenham.

Box, of Chippenham, was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, pay a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £85 at the hearing on December 19.

PC Lee added, “It is really fortunate that nobody was seriously injured in this incident.

“I hope that releasing this footage of the collision highlights the dangers and consequences of driving dangerously.

“The speed limits on our roads are there for your own safety – please respect them and other road users by driving within the limit at all times.”
