Greggs is set to launch a vegan version of their famed sausage roll in 2019, according to a leaked email.

The bakery chain has been rumoured to be working on a plant-based alternative to its meaty snack behind-the-scenes for years.

According to the email in question, a Greggs representative wrote, “We’re really excited about the launch of the Vegan Sausage Roll as we know you and our customers will be too.”

Other details apparently point towards the product also being allergen-free, with a statement reading, “To support you with allergens and the upcoming launch of our vegan sausage roll, we’ve created an Allergen and Vegan Sausage Roll training module.”

‘It will fly off the shelves’

The news comes following a petition from animal rights organisation PETA, which called for Greggs to introduce a cruelty-free version of the popular snack and collected over 20,000 signatures.

In a blog post, PETA said, “More people than ever are clamouring for vegan options from their favourite on-the-go eateries, and PETA urged Greggs to heed this growing demand by launching a vegan sausage roll.

“If it does become an option at the bakery, as the leak promises, this cruelty-free treat will fly off the shelves.”

Earlier this year, the bakery introduced its first savoury vegan product in the form of its Mexican Bean Wrap, which hit shelves in May.

‘Deck the halls with sausage rolls’

News of the introduction of a vegan version isn’t the only sausage roll news from Greggs this week.

The chain has also unveiled that it is bringing out a limited edition gift range for pastry enthusiasts this Christmas.

The bakery will be selling a Greggs Christmas jumper emblazoned with “Deck the Halls with Sausage Rolls”, a “sausage roll-inspired” umbrella and doughnut socks as part of its foray into the clothes and accessories market.

The Christmas jumper retails for £18, while a reusable cup featuring a sausage and doughnut design costs £3.
