A budget bottle of rum has beaten off fierce competition at the world’s most prestigious blind tasting competitions.

Budget supermarket Aldi’s own-label Sea Dog Premium Spiced Rum has been praised by industry experts at the Spirits Business Rum Masters, where judges awarded it a coveted gold medal.

The £16.99 bottle took the accolade alongside Ableforth’s Rumbullion! Navy-Strength, which retails at £45.

Budget bottle noted for its ‘excellence in taste’

Tasters noted the Sea Dog’s excellence in taste and great value price point. The panel commended the rum’s unique notes of sweet vanilla, warming spices, coffee and a citrus lime kick – finished with a deep and flavoursome aftertaste.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said, “We are delighted that our own-label rums have excelled once again at an international competition.

“Our UK based buying team are constantly challenging themselves with new and exciting innovation to add to our range, so seeing new products win awards is a real testament to their hard work.

“Rum continues to be a popular product with Aldi shoppers, and in 2018 alone we sold over two million bottles of the spirit. As more shoppers tap into the trend for creating cocktails at home, we’re expecting another great year of sales.”

Aldi’s bestselling Old Hopking Spiced Rum, which retails for £10.49, was also awarded a silver medal.

Award comes as demand for rum soars in recent years

Aldi’s drinks range has been awarded an impressive 50 accolades for its spirits range over the past year.

Their latest award comes as the UK’s thirst for rum grows. According to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, rum sales have risen by 32 per cent in value in the last five years, soaring to £1 billion in 2017.
