Hughes gave Arfield his debut as an 18-year-old at Falkirk but now almost 14 years later with the manager in charge at Ross County and Arfield a key figure in the Ibrox midfield, the pair are still in touch.

The boss revealed the message sent in the wake of the Staggies 1-0 win over Celtic in Dingwall, which helped Rangers move 18 points clear at the top of the table and just seven points from the championship.

Speaking to GO Radio, ex-Celtic defender Hughes said: “[Scott] text me last night, 'Thanks gaffer, thanks for the help out' - absolutely delighted."

A header from another ex-Falkirk player, Jordan White, gave the Highlanders victory over Neil Lennon’s second-placed side on Sunday night, a result which leaves Rangers the possibility of sealing their first title in a decade at the home of their rivals next month.
