The former Leeds United ace was booked by referee David Munro at the time but a panel of three former officials have decided the incident merited a greater punishment.

Roofe, 28, has been charged with allegedly breaching Disciplinary Rule 200: “Where any one of the sending off offences of (A1) serious foul play, (A2) violent conduct, and (A3) spitting at an opponent or any other person is commited by a player at a match, but that sending off offence was not seen by any of the match officials at the time that it was committed, the mandatory suspension for that sending off offence as provided for in Annex C of the Judicial Panel Protocol shall be applied to the player.”

Manager Steven Gerrard said in his pre-match press conference on Friday that he hadn’t had time to consider an appeal, but Roofe could face a two-match ban if the club accepts the charge. If they contest it, a fast track tribunal has been pencilled in for Tuesday February 9.

Gerrard said: “We’ll decide what we do in due course. I haven’t thought much about the tackle as the referee dealt with it; he’s five yards away and has seen the incident and gave a yellow card.”

The notice of complaint comes a week after Roofe’s Ibrox team-mate Alfredo Morelos was hit with a three-game ban for stamping on Hibs defender Ryan Porteous during the 1-0 win at Easter Road on January 27.
