Rangers hero Allan McGregor breaks wonder-save to deny Slavia Prague down to basics

Allan McGregor played down his wonder-save that has drawn comparisons with Gordon Banks’ iconic moment in Mexico 1970.

Ally McCoist waxed lyrical as he savoured over a series of post-match replays of McGregor’s one-handed stop to deny Lukas Masopust and compared it to Gordon Banks’ 1970 stop to deny Pele’s header against England.

McGregor though, was far less excited in his post-match analysis and simplified the process down to the basics.

Speaking to BT Sport, the Scotland international said: “I saw it a wee bit late. It’s one of these things - you react to it, stick your hand out and hope it doesn’t go in.

“It never, so happy days.”

The save had many watching amazed and it kept Rangers well in the tie - as did a stop moments earlier from McGregor when he tipped an overhit cross out of his top-corner with full-time approaching.

Rangers now bring the Czech Liga leaders back to Ibrox for next Thursday’s second leg, and McGregor admitted the 1-1 draw will only be a good result if Rangers progress.

He added: “Time will tell if we’re happy with it. After the start of the game I thought we did well to come back in and created some good chances and got a good goal and all round, played better.

“I don’t think we changed a lot, we knew what they were all about and we didn’t handle it well in first 15-20 minutes, but we did after that.

“We’re up against a good side, it will be difficult but we have the belief and go into every game at this club wanting to win in every competition.”
