Both players limped off during the first-half and Tavernier, who had started 40 of 41 matches this season, will miss the “next few games”.

Leon Balogun replaced the Ibrox captain and fared well on Thursday night.

With the transfer window closed, Rangers could still sign a free agent if the injury is long-term, but Gerrard has outlined the possible options available to him, with back-up Nathan Patterson one of five players to have recently breached Covid-19 lockdown rules.

“Leon Balogun played well in that position,” he said. “Ryan Jack can also do a job so we do have options if required at right-back.

“We are showing the strength and depth of the squad, I would love to play Jack every minute but I have to protect and look after him so he is ready and fresh going into the weekend.”
