Rangers boss indicates midfielder's career at Ibrox may be over

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has indicated that Bongani Zungu’s breach of coronavirus regulations has effectively ended his prospects of earning a permanent move to the Ibrox club.

South African international midfielder Zungu is one of five Rangers players currently facing disciplinary proceedings for their attendance at a house party in Glasgow last weekend.

The 28-year-old joined Rangers on loan from French club Amiens last October in a deal which gave the Premiership leaders an option to sign him on a longer term basis for £2.7million at the end of this season.

Zungu has made just four starting appearances for Rangers and another 12 from the subs’ bench so far.

Asked if Zungu’s involvement in the incident which contravened Covid-19 guidelines had done his chances of staying with Rangers no favours, Gerrard replied: “I think that would be fair to say, yes.”

Goalkeeper Brian Kinnear, full-backs Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey and striker Dapo Mebude are the other four Rangers players involved.

Gerrard insists it will not deflect him or his first team squad from their ongoing challenges in the Premiership and Europa League.

“That (coronavirus breach) will all take care of itself and we move forward with the players who have remained professional and want to be part of a successful team moving forward,” he said.

“We spoke as a group and I explained the situation to them. We put it behind us. We are at such an important time with the fixtures coming up that we can’t be worrying about that situation and letting any of our focus slide.”
