Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed the club accepted an offer for Old Firm target Ivan Toney two weeks ago which far exceeded the £5million Celtic reportedly offered for the striker.

The 24-year-old is in demand after a starring season in League One, netting 26 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions with the Posh chief admitting there is a big club outwith England involved in the deal.

Peterborough United value the player at £10million, keen to eke out as much money from their star with Newcastle United holding a significant sell-on clause.

“It’s been a frustrating time with regard to Ivan”, MacAnthony told his ‘Hard Truth’ podcast. “I’ve had Celtic fans telling me we shouldn’t be asking £5 million for a League One player, but believe me the deal we negotiated a couple of weeks ago was for a lot more than that.

“Ivan was given permission to speak to the club but so far nothing has happened.

“There are other clubs negotiating to buy him. Others are going to join the party. There are Premier League clubs having recruitment meetings in the next few days.

“There’s a big club, which isn’t in England, involved, but we won’t have our pants pulled down on the fee. We promised Ivan last January he could leave if we didn’t go up and he can, but for the right fee. He’s worth what we say he is worth. We are like the Mounties, we always get our man and we always get the price we want for our man."

Celtic have reportedly had bids of around £4m-£5million rejected for Toney but their focus seems to be on West Ham forward Albian Ajeti, who is expected in Glasgow today.

Meanwhile Rangers held an interest but have since signed two strikers.
