Zoo’s escaped scarlet ibis is recaptured

A Scarlet Ibis which escaped from Edinburgh Zoo has been recaptured after six days.

The tropical bird, named Cherry, made its escape last week when a squirrel chewed through netting over its enclosure during the night.

It was then spotted at sites across the city, while attempts to recapture the animal failed.

There had been concerns the ibis would be attacked by wild birds because of its colour, but this morning staff from the zoo managed to recapture the bird, which seemed in good health after its adventure.

A spokesman for the zoo confirmed the bird was captured in Cramond on Sunday after coming down from its perch for long enough for staff to reach it.

The bird is about 2ft long and is native to South and Central America, particularly Trinidad & Tobago and Brazil.
