A friend of an Irish-language journalist searched the video site for ‘scannáin’ - the Irish word for film - and stumbled across a large number of pornographic films.

Maitíú Ó Coimín, who works for Irish news site Tuairisc (meaning Report) posted an article about the findings, in which he revealed that there were around ‘15 to 20 films of a questionable nature’.

He added: “I looked a bit further into it. These were real pornographic films.”

YouTube acted quickly after O Coimín’s findings spread across news sites on the internet, removing the videos after admitting it had been unaware of the technique used to circumvent the site’s strict guidelines on sexually explicit content.

A spokesperson told the Irish Independent: “YouTube’s community guidelines clearly state that sexually explicit content is not allowed on our site”.

“We remove videos and channels that violate our policies when flagged for our attention”.

“YouTube staff review flagged videos 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to determine whether they violate our community guidelines.”
