Youth group praised for community action

GRASSROOTS action is the way to combat anti-social behaviour, Edinburgh Western SNP MSP Colin Keir has told the Scottish Parliament.

Speaking in a debate on justice, he singled out the work of the Muirhouse Youth Development Group as an example of a community-based initiative which was tackling the problem directly.

He said with little to do in the area, some young people inevitably turned to crime.

"The aim of the group was simple - to increase the youngsters' self-esteem and aspirations.

"The admirable thing about this organisation is it was formed by the people of the community who believed their youngsters were entitled to a much brighter future. I firmly believe action in the community by the community is the way forward."
