Youngsters ‘face future on the dole’, according to new study

UNEMPLOYED youngsters are more likely to face a future on the dole queue.

That’s the findings of a new study which has found 20 per cent of people who are out of work between the ages of 18 to 24 are unemployed a decade later.

Researchers from the Employment Research Institute (ERI) at Edinburgh Napier University said their data revealed the extent of the long-term impact of youth ­unemployment.

Professor Ronald McQuaid, who led the research, said: “The effects of young people being out of work for long periods mean that they are more likely to be unemployed or to have lower incomes even decades into the future.

“It is important that the various government, as well as other agencies, work closely together to reduce this scourge.”
