WWI footballers remembered

THE football players who died after signing up to fight during the First World War are set to be remembered as part of national Armed Forces Day.

The original programme of events for the day, hosted by Edinburgh this year, did not include any mention of McCrae's Battalion, which included the entire Hearts team who were top of the league at the time. But deputy council leader Steve Cardownie, a Hearts fan, intervened and is now hoping to arrange for a stall telling the story of their bravery. It will be part of Veterans Day at Holyrood Park on June 25.

Councillor Cardownie said: "It is a unique story for Edinburgh that this team heeded the call and all signed up. There is no more appropriate place to tell it than on Armed Forces Day."
