Where folk really get fired up over New Year

Despite a government safety campaign, fireworks and gunfire injured nearly 500 people in the Philippines as revellers welcomed in the New Year in one of the world’s most raucous and dangerous celebrations.

Health secretary Enrique Ona said the number of injuries – 454 from fireworks and 18 from stray bullets – was slightly lower than last year but remained alarming.

Fireworks ignited at least three fires that destroyed many houses in the Manila area.

“Again, it seems our appeal to mothers to keep their children away from fireworks wasn’t effective,” Mr Ona told a news conference.

Many Filipinos, largely influenced by Chinese tradition, believe that noisy New Year celebrations drive away evil and misfortune.

Interior secretary Jesse Robredo said at least 65 people were arrested for using illegally large fireworks.

Health officials attempted to discourage dangerous celebrations by showing gory pictures of injuries, but the violent tradition continued.
