The unique Scottish sense of humour is only too evident in some of the soft drink’s more controversial ads, such as one cow’s plan for the future: ‘When I’m a beef burger, I want to be washed down with Irn Bru’.

Now Russia is getting in on the act of bizarre but memorable marketing campaigns for Scotland’s ‘other national drink’, with the appearance of a series of online adverts starring 6ft-tall penguins.

In one advert, the penguins can be seen wreaking havoc in shopping centres, whilst another shows the Antarctic creatures taking over the Moscow and St Petersburg metro systems.

Memorable scenes include angry penguins roughing up restaurant staff as it becomes apparent that raw fish isn’t on the menu, and an emperor penguin displaying a certain talent at playing the drums.

The ads have been a huge hit in Russia, and there are plans for them to be screened on TV and in cinemas later this year.

As many as five factories in Russia are now churning out cans and bottles as demand for the Barr’s product increases rapidly, having become a best-seller.
