UN chief pushes for Cyprus deal

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has told rival Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders who will be meeting next week that he expects them to reach agreement on re-unifying the Mediterranean island.

Mr Ban will be hosting the closed-door meeting with Cypriot president Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu on Monday and Tuesday. It will be his fifth attempt to press for a Cyprus settlement.

Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by Cypriot supporters of union with Greece.
