The Uddingston-based biscuit company ships to more than 30 countries worldwide, but it was Yemen’s recent order of 700 cases of Caramel Wafers that got the firm’s bosses talking.

And the family baker revealed that the Middle Eastern country has taken delivery of 300,000 Caramel Wafers in the last 12 months alone.

Oversea Sales chief Alan Burnett told The Sun: “We sent out a huge container last year full of about 700 cases.

“They seem to really like Caramel Logs and Wafers out there.

“They sell them in supermarkets and it helps that they don’t melt.”

Burnett added that selling teacakes - which enjoyed a resurgence in sales following their appearance at Glasgow 2014 - wasn’t an option because ‘they’re not robust enough to make the long journey’.

Tunnock’s ships to 35 countries across the globe, with Saudi Arabia the biggest importer of the chocolate treats. Managing Director Boyd Tunnock visited the country more than 40 years ago on a trade mission and has maintained links ever since.

The Uddingston firm’s Middle Eastern markets also include Iraq and Kuwait.
