When the trio failed to return after splitting from the rest of a larger group on Sunday, fellow climbers went looking for them.
The bodies of Dr Mackenzie, Elena Cernicka, 35, and Stephanie Grothe, 30, were found below the peak after a search on Monday.
The Scot grew up near Inverness and was sent to board at Fettes College, Edinburgh, at the age of eight.
Yesterday a spokeswoman for Fettes College said: “We are saddened to hear of the sudden death of Neil Mackenzie. The whole Fettes community is devastated by the tragedy of this young life cut short. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
