Taiwan: President Ma given diplomatic mandate

The president won re-election yesterday, paving the way for a continuation of the China-friendly policies that have pleased Beijing and Washington, but worried those concerned about the durability of Taiwan’s independence.

President Ma Ying-jeou took 51.6 per cent of votes against 45.6 per cent for Tsai Ing-wen of the main opposition. Ma’s Nationalist Party also retained control of the 113-seat parliament.
