A government airstrike on a heavily contested neighbourhood in the city of Aleppo killed at least five people yesterday, while regime forces battled rebels in a town outside the capital of Damascus, activists said.

Aleppo and Damascus are two of the key fronts in the civil war between President Bashar al-Assad and rebels trying to overthrow his regime.

Opposition fighters have managed to seize control of several neighbourhoods in Aleppo since storming the city last summer, while the regime has largely kept the rebels at bay so far in Damascus, though fighters have captured several suburbs and look increasingly capable of threatening the heart of the city – and Assad’s power.
