Swedes face jail for ‘terror trip’

A COURT in Ethiopia convicted two Swedish journalists of supporting terrorism yesterday after they illegally entered the country with a Somali rebel group.

The pair, who face up to 15 years in prison at sentencing next week, said they were only gathering news.

But Judge Shemsu Sirgaga said that was “very unlikely,” accusing the Ogaden National Liberation Front of organising the men’s journey. Ethiopian troops captured Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye six months ago during a clash with rebels in the country’s east. Ethiopia says the rebels are terrorists and bans journalists from the area.
