Soldiers and rebels do battle in Congo

Soldiers backed by United Nations’ helicopter gunships have been battling rebels around a strategic army garrison in eastern Congo, as thousands continue to flee a three-month-old rebellion allegedly backed by Rwanda.

UN Radio Okapi said rebels of the M23 movement yesterday began attacking Rumangabo military camp, a mile from the HQ of the Virunga National Park, a mountain gorilla reserve.
