Scotland’s politicians pay tribute to Nelson Mandela
Alex Salmond said: “The death of Nelson Mandela marks the passing of a great statesman and a global icon, so it is only appropriate that we here in Scotland, a land Mr Mandela had great affinity with, mark his passing appropriately.
“That is why I have today instructed that the South African national flag should fly at half-mast alongside the Saltire outside St Andrew’s House in Edinburgh.

Johann Lamont
The Scottish Labour Leader Johann Lamont said: “Nelson Mandela is the towering figure of my life since I became politically aware. He fought injustice when there seemed to be no chance of victory. But he fought. He endured. And he won.
“And when Nelson Mandela won he struggled as hard for peace as he had to defeat apartheid.
“Nelson Mandela was the best of Africa - he was the best of humanity - he was the best of us all.”
Ruth Davidson
Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson said: “Nelson Mandela was a giant of our age.
“He healed his nation and, in doing so, inspired millions.
“He showed the world that reconciliation could be a more powerful force than retribution.”
Union tribute
Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said: “It is impossible to overstate the legacy of Nelson Mandela. Quite simply, he changed the world and in doing so gave hope to millions that even in the face of crushing injustice a better future was possible. “Not only did he lead the people of South Africa to freedom, in overthrowing apartheid and returning his country to the family of Nations, he provided the most powerful example possible for all who are committed to the cause of social and economic justice. “He was an inspiration to me and to millions across the globe. He was an astonishing and remarkable human being - a man of great wisdom, dignity, fortitude, integrity and compassion. He endured decades of persecution with the same strength and courage he demonstrated in reaching out to his persecutors. “Nelson Mandela embodied all that is good in humanity. “He was a revolutionary leader who became a President and the greatest statesman we have even known. “He did his duty and his long walk is over. Ours continues emboldened by his example. “Nelson Mandela – Madiba - Rest in Peace.”
