His family in Scotland now fear the worst and relatives say that even if he does recover he will likely suffer lifelong consequences.

His cousin, Roy Smith, from Stirling, said yesterday: “It’s not looking good. This terrible incident has left a profound effect on the family in Canada. Michael was sole carer for his daughter, Ariel, and he was also helping to look after, and financially support, his elderly parents.

“Despite what has happened, the police just don’t seem to be giving out any information and none of the relatives have been told anything about the investigation.”

Originally from Cove, near Aberdeen, Mr Forry emigrated to British Columbia with his parents, Joan and Mike, 30 years ago.

A truck driver at the Wolverine Mine near Tumbler Ridge, he lives in the town of Mackenzie but was visiting friends 440 miles away in Kamloops on 24 March when he was attacked.

He had been a passenger in a car when the driver sounded his horn at teenagers jaywalking across a road, and believing one had hit the SUV he got out of the car to speak to the group.

A heated argument ensued and Mr Forry was hit on the back of the head with a skateboard by a 15-year-old boy. He collapsed and has not regained consciousness.
