Riot police hold activists

RUSSIAN riot police rounded up scores of opposition activists, including leaders of liberal parties, yesterday as they rallied against the president, Vladimir Putin.

The crackdown came a week before elections. "What we are seeing now resembles a military operation," said an opposition leader in St Petersburg.
