Rebels push closer to centre of Mali

Islamist rebels drove the Malian army out of the strategic central town of Konna yesterday, in the fiercest fighting since militant groups seized control of northern Mali nine months ago.

The fall of Konna marks a significant push by the rebels to Mali’s centre. Since April, the Islamist rebels have occupied the vast desert of northern Mali.
