Police strike sees crime soar

A POLICE strike in the Brazilian state of Bahia has sparked a wave of murders and other violence in Salvador, the state capital, just two weeks ahead of Carnaval celebrations, expected to attract visitors from around the world.

At least 80 murders have taken place in the north- eastern area since a statewide police strike began last Tuesday, a 129 per cent increase from the previous week, local media said.

Assaults and lootings of stores also reportedly increased and more than 200 cars have been reported stolen since the strike over pay began.
