Opium production up again in Burma

Opium production in Burma rose for the fifth consecutive year in 2011, while its price rocketed nearly 50 per cent, according to the United Nations.

An upward trend that started in 2007 saw opium production rise an estimated 5 per cent in 2011 over 2010, from about 640 tons to about 670 tons.

The average price rose 48 per cent, according to the UN survey.
