No fair cop for fare dodgers

Online activists have angered public transport officials in Melbourne, Australia, with a plan to set up a fund to help fare cheats pay off hefty fines.

Up to 1,000 people have signed up to the “Tramsurance” scheme, under which commuters will put A$20 (£13) a month into a fund to pay fines handed to passengers caught evading fares on buses, trains and trams.

It was conceived by students Tom Pisel and Sohut Raut, after the former was hit with a A$180 fine for losing his ticket.

Officials have ordered them to shut down their website and have threatened to tell police.
