The Scotland First Minister, who is in America until Thursday, is due to be interviewed on the late night chat show hosted by comedian Jon Stewart - which earlier listed her as a “comedian” before quickly rectifying the mistake on the programme’s website.

She will be following in the footsteps of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown by appearing in the popular slot, although the former prime ministers were interviewed after leaving office.

Ms Sturgeon will begin her visit to the city with a fact-finding mission to a school where attainment levels have improved.

She will seek to draw lessons for Scotland’s education system during a meeting with Carmen Farina, the New York City schools chancellor, at Daniel Hale Williams School.

The First Minister will visit New York Presbyterian Hospital, a top children’s institution with links to Glasgow’s Sick Kids hospital, as well as Jabil, a US based business which is investing in Scotland.

She will also give a business speech at Glasgow Caledonian University’s New York campus.

On Tuesday the SNP leader will host a reception to kick off Glasgow School of Art’s fundraising appeal in the US before heading to Washington.

There she will address an audience at the World Bank, attend a meeting at the International Monetary Fund, visit the US Holocaust Museum and make a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations.
