New trial for entrepreneur

China’s supreme court has overturned the death sentence of a female tycoon whose case sparked a public outcry.

The supreme people’s court said yesterday that it would send 31-year-old Wu Ying’s case back to a provincial court for retrial.

Wu built up a multimillion-dollar business and was praised by state media as an example to other Chinese female entrepreneurs, but was later convicted of illegally raising money from private creditors.

Her conviction prompted an outcry by supporters who said the penalty was too severe in a system where Communist Party officials often escape punishment.
