NELSON Mandela, 94, the former president and anti-apartheid leader, was admitted to hospital in Pretoria last night for a scheduled check-up.

A spokesman said Mandela went for tests “to manage existing conditions in line with his age”.

“Doctors are conducting tests and have thus far indicated that there is no reason for any alarm,” he said. Mandela was in hospital for nearly three weeks in December, when he was treated for a lung infection and had a surgical procedure to remove gallstones.
