The US House of Representatives has voted to expel US congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green from two committees over her embracing of conspiracy theories.

The pro-Trump lawmaker has made a name for herself in the lower chamber of congress, due to her past support of the Qanon conspiracy, as well as previous backing of 9/11 and school shooting conspiracies.

The elected official’s bizarre behaviour has seen her receive bipartisan criticism, with Democrats introducing a resolution to strip her of committee assignments. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell meanwhile labelled the conspiracy theories she has espoused as "loony lies".

Who is Marjorie Taylor Greene and what conspiracy theories has she backed?

Marjorie Taylor Greene is a far-right politician serving as a U.S. representative for Georgia's 14th congressional district.

The staunch Trump supporter has previously served as the chief financial officer of Taylor Commerical, a construction company founded by her father. She also founded, ran and sold a cross fitness gym.

Taylor Greene was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 after a campaign marred by controversy. The 46-year-old led with the slogan “Save America, Stop Socialism!" and had a video removed from Facebook in which she held an assault rifle and warned “antifa terrorists” to “stay the hell out of” Georgia.

During her first weeks in power Taylor Greene brought articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden, accusing him of corruption and abuse of power.

Prior to her election Taylor Greene garnered controversy for her support of the Q-Anon conspiracy which proposes that Donald Trump is waging a war against Satan-worshipping paedophiles in government.

She has also previously suggested that Hillary Clinton is involved in a paedophile ring and has expressed support for the execution of prominent Democrats, accusing them of treason.

A recently unearthed video showed the congresswoman harassing Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg while he met with members of the Senate.

In 2018 she suggested that the September 11 attacks were part of a wider government conspiracy.

How has she been punished?

The US House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Democrats, voted to expel the Republican lawmaker from education and budget panels.

The motion to expel her from the two committees was passed 230-199 with eleven Republicans joining the Democrats.

Republican house leader Kevin McCarthy has condemned the move and warned of retribution whenever the republicans next take charge of the House of Representatives
