Lockerbie bomber death: Question of guilt likely to remain unanswered

AS the world reacts to the death of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, many questions about the Lockerbie bombing remain unanswered 23 years later.

Whether Megrahi took those secrets to his grave varies depending on who you talk to.

• The central and in many ways the only question is whether Megrahi is really guilty.

His supporters say the Crown Office failed to disclose key evidence, which would have “broken the chain between Megrahi and Lockerbie” during the prosecution of the case.

In particular, they say there were key differences between a fragment of circuit board found after the explosion and 20 timers made by Swiss company Mebo for the Libyan intelligence services, for whom Megrahi was an agent.

• If it was not Megrahi, who was behind he bombing?

Earlier evidence pointed to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), allegedly working for Iran.

The Crown Office is currently investigating, but appears to be looking at additional suspects to Megrahi, rather than alternative ones.

• Who broke into Heathrow 16 hours before the explosion over Lockerbie?

That break-in, which occurred in Terminal Three close to where Pan Am flight 103 would be boarded up with suitcases, could explain how the bomb got on board the plane.

It could implicate someone other than Megrahi – or an accomplice. However, it has never been solved.
