Libya vows to help hunt for Lockerbie bombers

THE interim prime minister of Libya has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to allowing Scottish law officials to track down those responsible for the Lockerbie bombing.

Prime Minister El-Keib yesterday met with the Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland and Chief Constable of Dumfries and Galloway Police Patrick Shearer on his first visit to London just days after the death of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, the only man convicted of the murder of 270 people when Pan Am flight 103 was blown up over Lockerbie on 21 December 1988.

He reaffirmed the commitment to co-operate with them and FBI law officers in further investigations into the atrocity.

A Crown Office spokesman said: “The [Libyan] prime minister made it clear that he recognised the seriousness of this crime and following the clarification he would take this forward as a priority.”

Afterwards Mr El-Keib met Prime Minister David Cameron in a meeting where Lockerbie was discussed and agreement was reached to allow Metropolitan Police officers to go to Libya to investigate the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher in 1984.

Mr El-Keib promised that his country would “work very closely together” with the UK.
