Ireland ‘may need EU referendum’

Senior Irish government figures have discussed the possibility of the president asking the supreme court to rule on whether Europe’s plans for fiscal union would require a referendum, a Dublin newspaper reported yesterday.

Irish citizens are entitled to vote on any major transfer of powers to Brussels, and the country’s minister for Europe has said that there was a 50-50 chance of a vote being needed once the pact is finalised in March.
