Former guerrilla is Timor president

A FORMER guerrilla fighter who became East Timor’s army chief has been named as the nation’s new president.

The court of appeal yesterday said that Taur Matan Ruak had won the 16 April run-off with 61.2 per cent of the votes, defeating rival Francisco “Lu Olo” Guterres.
