Last year he questioned whether Obama was born in the US and therefore eligible to be president, later taking the credit for the publication of his long-form birth certificate.

The US Apprentice star has used his Twitter page to comment upon the US presidential race, and he had promised a “big Obama announcement” to his 1.7m followers.

But far from any revelation which could derail the president’s re-election campaign, Mr Trump’s announcement was completely of his own making.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Mr Trump made the promise to give a fraction of his fortune to a charity of President Obama’s choosing.

“If Barack Obama opens up and gives his college records and applications and his passport records and applications, I will give a charity of his choice – inner-city kids in Chicago, American Cancer Society, Aids research, anything he wants – a cheque, immediately, for $5m,” he said.

“The cheque will be given one hour after he releases the records so stated.”

The New York-based mogul considered running for the presidency before endorsing Mitt Romney in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Mr Trump gave a deadline of 5pm on 31 October for the release of President Obama’s records.
