Civil servants axed in corruption crackdown

DEMOCRATIC Republic of Congo has sacked 119 top civil servants as part of a drive to clean up the country's often corrupt and chaotic government agencies.

President Joseph Kabila signed a decree removing the disgraced employees from the finance and budget ministries. A further 2,500 civil servants, mainly from tax and customs offices, were forced to retire.
