Britain to open diplomatic office in Burma

Britain is to open a new branch of the Foreign Office in Burma.

It is the latest sign that relations between Burma and the west are thawing after the country’s election.

Foreign Secretary William Hague told MPs the FCO would “establish a British interests office” in the new capital Naypyitaw.

He said: “A British interests office in the administrative capital would strengthen the work of our embassy in Rangoon and demonstrate our intention to step up engagement with the Burmese government and people.

“The office would provide enhanced access to government interlocutors who are based in Naypyitaw.

“This access would be vital for UK/Burmese relations and for encouraging democratic reform in the country.”

Mr Hague’s written statement to MPs today follows the historic meeting between Prime Minister David Cameron and Burmese democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi earlier this month.

Ms Suu Kyi plans to visit Britain in June as Burma’s rulers begin reforms.
