Student Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was transferred to the medical wing of Fort Devens federal jail, a former army base 40 miles west of Bostobn, where the US Marshals Service can hold him securely as he recovers from wounds suffered in a shoot-out with police eight days ago, which killed his brother.

Officials at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre had faced criticism for treating the alleged bomber at the same time as caring for several of the 264 people injured in two explosions on 15 April.

Three people died in the attack and a Boston police officer was killed four days later.

The surviving suspect is charged with using a weapon of mass destruction and could face the death penalty.

He is likely to be held in solitary confinement at Fort Devens.

“Given the severity of the charges, he would be placed in a more restrictive housing environment,” said prison spokesman John Coulautti.

The development came on the same day as the suspect’s father, Anzor Tsarnaev, postponed a trip from his home in Dagestan to the US, where FBI investigators were expected to interview him.
