Boris Johnson calls Pro Trump riots in Capitol Building 'disgraceful'

The Prime Minister has responded to the latest scene from America where rioters have stormed Capitol Building.

Mr Johnson tweeted: “Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress.

"The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.”

Pro Trump protests descended into riots as some stormed Capitol Building, leading to law makers told to hide somewhere safe, and many evacuated.

Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer also tweeted, saying: “Horrendous scenes from the US.

“These are not ‘protestors’ - this a direct attack on democracy and legislators carrying out the will of the American people.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also reacted to the incoming news saying: “The scenes from the Capitol are utterly horrifying. Solidarity with those in America on the side of democracy and the peaceful and constitutional transfer of power.

"Shame on those who have incited this attack on democracy.”

Donald Trump has released a video asking the rioters to go home in peace, although adds that he “loves them” and that the 2020 election was fraudulent.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab tweeted: “The US rightly takes great pride in its democracy, and there can be no justification for these violent attempts to frustrate the lawful and proper transition of power.”
