Bangladesh: UK experts to advise on factories

BRITISH safety experts are flying to Bangladesh to try to prevent a repeat of the devastating garment factory collapse which killed more than 1,100 workers.

The team of three, two from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and one from the Better Regulation Delivery Office, will advise the Bangladeshi building regulations agency on how to tighten up its inspections regime.

The visit follows the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Dhaka earlier this year.

International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: “The tragic factory collapse in Bangladesh in May was a wake-up call about the appalling conditions that workers in the developing world endure to produce cheap clothes.”
